Abstract

727,415. Multistable state circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 29, 1952 [March 7, 1951], No. 5371/52. Class 40 (6). [Also in Group XIX] A stepping circuit, e.g. a counting chain, comprises identical shunt circuits and each comprising a " two-terminal trigger device " G1, G2 &c. (i.e. an electric device whose voltage/current characteristic, in respect of voltage appearing across and current flowing between two terminals, exhibits a negative resistance region) a rectifier G11, G12 &c. and a resistance A1, A2 &c. in series, and coupling condensers Cl, C2, &c., between consecutive shunt circuits. The potential normally applied across conductors a, b, across which the shunt circuits are connected, is insufficient by itself to trigger a device to the highly conductive condition, but when the potential is temporarily removed or reduced and then restored to normal by means symbolized by switch S an initially triggered device such as G1 is extinguished and the charge in the condenser such as C1 added to the applied potential causes triggering of the next device such as G3, the next operation of S causing a stepping to C3 and so on. The trigger devices may be cold-cathode gas-discharge diodes as shown, thermistors, p-type transistors or dynatrons.
