Abstract

728,740. Multi-stable state circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 1, 1951 [Dec. 7, 1950], No. 25562/51. Class 40 (6). A two stable state trigger circuit comprises a crystal diode having a positive resistance value in one stable state and a negative resistance value in the other, and an electron discharge device in series with the diode, switching being effected by application of a pulse to a control electrode of the discharge device. In Fig. 1, a germanium or silicon semi-conductor block 13 having a base electrode 18 and whisker electrode 19 has a voltage/current characteristic as shown in Fig. 2 having portions of positive and of negative resistance. A voltage from source 10 is applied across diode 13 in series with resistance 14, and the position of the load line corresponding to resistance 14 in Fig. 2 shows that the arrangement has two positions of stability indicated at OFF and ON. When the circuit is in the small current, OFF condition, triggering is effected by applying a negative pulse from source 15 to the junction of the diode and the resistance, so that the circuit jumps to the high current ON position, where there is a small potential across the diode and a larger potential across the resistance. Triggering from the ON condition to the OFF condition is effected by applying a positive pulse from source 15. According to the invention (Fig. 4) resistance 14 is replaced by a valve 22, the trigger pulses being applied to the grid of the valve.
