A closure device for handbags or the like, comprises closing members movable under spring action into the closure position and an arresting device which retains the members in a position corresponding to the open position of the bag. In the arrangement according to Figs. 3 and 4 in which closing members 3, 4, biassed away from each other by a spring 10, are slidable in a cage 2 provided on a case 1 which is fastened to a handbag by prongs 7, a lock frame 6 is inserted into a flap 5 of the bag so as to fit closely over the case 1. Movement of members 3, 4 is limited by lugs 8 secured thereto and movable in slots 9 in the case 1. A leaf spring 13 secured to a side wall of the case 1 is provided with pins 14 adapted to engage perforations 15 in the top of the case 1 in the closed position of the bag and holes 16 in the members 3, 4 into which latter the pins 14 enter when the spring moves upwardly by its own resiliency when the members 3, 4 are pressed towards one another to open the bag. The spring 13 projects through a slot 17 in the front wall of the casing 1 into the path of the lock frame 6 on the flap 5 when the latter is being closed. In an application to a bag having hinged frames 22, 24, in which closing members 18, 19 are mounted on a base plate 20 which is fixed to a cross-member 21 of the closing frame 22 and in which lugs 25, 26 depending from the members 18, 19 are movable in a slot of the member 21 to limit movement of the members 18, 19, brackets 31, 32 fixed to a cross member 23 of the frame 24, are provided with perforations 33, 34 for registering with pins 28, 29 on the lugs 25, 26 in the closed position of the bag. A U-shaped plate 37, adapted to be displaced in guides 38 at right angles to the direction of movement of members 18, 19 engages in the open position of the bag, in slots in the members 18, 19. The plate 37 is loaded by a spring 41, the other end of which bears against a fixed sleeve 42 over which the members 18, 19 slide. A plate 43 fixed to the plate 37 extends between the members 21, 23 and upon closing the bag, is displaced inwardly to withdraw the legs of the plate 37 from the slots 40 and to free the members 18, 19.
