Abstract
726,708. Heat-insulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 1, 1953 [April 3, 1952], No. 9088/53. Class 64 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A flexible panel or wrapping, e.g. for insulating a pipe 15, is a sealed, evacuated envelope having two major walls 12<SP>1</SP> joined by two curved or flat minor walls 12<SP>11</SP> and corrugated to facilitate bending. The panel is formed by first flattening a tube of metal such as stainless steel or that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Invar", then inserting a batt 13 of glass fibres arranged as described in Specification 715,174 and precompacted to a density of 10-30 Ibs./c. ft. as described in Specification 715,175. A batt of other mineral fibres such as silica, aluminium oxide, slag wool, rock wool or mineral wool may be used. One end of the envelope is sealed by welding or brazing and the major walls corrugated by subjecting the envelope to internal fluid pressure in a female die. The envelope is then evacuated and sealed. The corrugations may be formed before the batt is inserted.
