Driving-mechanism.-In a mechanism for controlling the operation of a line casting and composing machine by means of recorded signals, utilizing selectable elements co-operating with code bars which are variably set in dependence on the signals, so that a particular element is selected by the code bars for each signal, the selectable elements are movable into and out of engagement with the code bars under the control of a bail member to which a reciprocating motion is imparted by a toggle device, the mechanism being so arranged that when the bail member is moved in one direction to bring the selectable elements into engagement with the code bars, a selected element is brought into operative engagement with an associated interponent member, and when the bail member is moved in the opposite direction, its motion is conveyed through the selected element and the interponent member to a corresponding actuator member which serves to actuate the appropriate key-lever or equivalent operating member of the machine. The code bars 44 are-set as described in Specification 415,798, and they have notches in their upper edges, which co-operate with leftwardly and rightwardly offset projections on selectable members 38 pivoted at 84. A bail member 86 carried on arms 87 pivoted at 84 engages near their free ends the elements 38. When a toggle 88, 89 is collapsed by an eccentric 96, the bail member is lowered and allows a spring 85 to move a selected element 38 downwards, which further allows a spring 98 to move a corresponding interponent member 37 to the right so that a shoulder 100 thereof overlies the end of the element 38. When the toggle is straightened, the bail rises, restores the element 38 and through it and the member 37 operates the actuator member 35, which actuates the requisite key-lever as described in Specification 415,798. The toggle is moved slightly past dead-centre, and a stripper bar 97 carried thereon moves the member 37 to the left to clear its shoulder 100 from the element 38.
