726,460. Motor driving arrangements. HOOVER, Ltd. May 7, 1953 [May 21, 1952], No. 12723/53. Class 35. [Also in Group II. A food mixer comprises a power unit arranged, alternatively, either to be supported on a pillar upstanding from a platform, with a downwardly facing power take off coupling in the power unit overhanging and spaced from the platform to operate a tool in a vessel supported on the platform, or to be supported on the platform, with a power take-off coupling in driving connection with an upwardly facing power take-off coupling in the pillar for driving a tool in a utensil supported on the pillar. In Fig. 2, an electric power unit 10 is detachably secured by a hook 30 to a pillar 13, spaced from and overhanging a platform 12 upon which a bowl 18 is rotatably mounted to receive two beater elements 26 extending from two downwardly facing power take-off couplings 24. The bowl 18 is rotatable either by hand or automatically, depending respectively upon a stub shaft 16 of a turn-table 17 being inserted into either a central bearing 14, or an eccentric bearing 15, Fig. 1 (not shown). In Fig. 3 the power unit 10 is supported on the platform 12 with the hook 30 received in a depression 33 in the platform 12, and a high speed horizontal power take-off 31 engages a coupling 32 which is geared to an upwardly facing power take-off 36 in a recess 34 of the pillar 13. The power take-off 36 drives a tool incorporated in a utensil inserted in the recess 34, such as a blender 40, or a juice extractor 50, Fig. 4 (not shown). The wall of the recess 34 is cut away at 35 to receive the spout of a utensil, such as a juice extractor. In an alternative construction, Fig. 4 (not shown), the power unit 10 is supported on the platform 12, and one of the downwardly facing power take-off couplings 24 engages a vertical shaft extending through the platform 12, which in turn drives the upwardly facing power take off coupling in the recess 34 by means of a belt drive of step-up ratio disposed beneath the platform. The power unit is provided with a handle 22 enabling the mixer to be held in the hand and used independently of the base.
