A coalescing unit for treating liquid, e.g. a mixture of oil and water, comprises a relatively stiff annular supporting wall 13, Fig. 3, e.g. of paper, arranged in pleats, a layer 17 of coalescing material, e.g. of glass filaments, surrounding it, a rigid end closure wall 20, e.g. of metal; Fig. 2, at one or each end of the supporting wall, means, e.g. an elastic gasket 24 sealing the supporting wall, and a gasket 23 of coalescing material parallel to the end wall 20 and extending over and in contact with the end or ends of the layer 17 to form a seal which prevents liquid from by-passing the layer without coalescent treatment. The gasket 23 is initially of annular form but after the application of end pressure during assembly it is cut by the edges of the supporting wall 13 into individual segments 25 lying alternately inside and outside the wall. A perforate metal tube 10, Fig. 2, reinforced internally by a helical wire 12 and in contact externally with the end wall 20 may be provided and an outer shell (not shown) may be accommodated between the recesses 27 of the two end walls 20.
