Abstract
725,509. Railway signals. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., SHEPPARD, E. A., and STEVENS, S. A. Aug. 6, 1953, No. 21717/53. Addition to 676,644. Class 105. [Also in Group XI] The optical projection apparatus of the parent Specification, and comprising a transparent block consisting of a number of separate cups or shells 3e, 3f, &c. nested together one within the other, the arrangement being such that rays from the light source enter each cup or shell and emerge therefrom after reflection at the outer surface only, is modified in that each inner surface 7 is coated with a light-absorbing medium such as optical black paint. Thus, when the apparatus is used as a railway signal lamp there is no possibility of the formation of "phantom" signals by rays of light travelling down one or more of the cup elements by internal reflection at the abutting surfaces thereof and being reflected off the rear face of the lens to reemerge from the front thereof.
