Abstract
725,031. Washing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 11, 1953 [May 9, 1952], No. 13089/53. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A clothes-washing machine having an open top tub slidable into and out of a stationary cabinet which carries a vertically movable cover for sealing the open top of the tub as described in connection with a dishwasher in Specification 698,936, [Group XXIII], which is referred to, has a liquid draining system for conveying liquid from the tub and includes a pump provided with an intake connected with the lower portion of the interior of the tub, a conduit carried by the tub having one end connected with the pump discharge and extending into the tub up to a point where its discharge end lies substantially in the plane of the top opening, and an exterior conduit mounted on the cover with its entrance opening aligned with the other end of the interior conduit so as to establish a continuous liquid connection between the conduits when the cover is closed. Referring to Figs. 1 and 3 the pump 41 having an inlet 40 is connected through a valve 43 and external conduit 45 with a conduit 47 in the tub 10. A flange 50 of the pipe 47 is engageable by a sealing gasket 49 surrounding the opening of an elbow 48 carried by the cover 20 and connected by a short hose 52 to a vertical conduit 51 carried by the cabinet. The conduit 51 extends horizontally within a hollow back splasher, 8, 9, for the cabinet top 7 and terminates in a downturned end 53 communicating through an air gap with the open upper end of a drain pipe 54 fixed in the cabinet. When the drain connection is established by lowering the cover 20 on to the tub the air gap prevents back siphoning of soiled liquid from the drain system from entering the tub, and any water which may flow from the air gap is directed by a baffle 54a to an opening 54b and hence to the top 7 from which it may flow to a sink 3, Fig. 1, associated with the cabinet. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, water is supplied to the tub from a pipe 33, valve 35 and pipe 34 all of which are fixed in the cabinet. The pipe 34 has a horizontal extension 34a, within the back splasher, terminating in a downturned end 34b which communicates through an air gap with a funnel 36 carried by the cabinet in a bracket 37. The funnel connects by a short hose 38 with an elbow 39 carried by the cover 20. Here again when the cover 20 is lowered on to the tub to establish the water supply connection to the tub, the air gap will prevent any back siphoning of liquid from the tub to the water-supply system. Any liquid which may flow from this air gap is directed by a baffle 39b to an opening 39c and thence to the top 7. If desired the conduit 51 and elbow 48 of the drain system and the funnel 36 and elbow 39 of the water supply system may be respectively rigidly connected, in lieu of the short hose connections. In this case the air gaps will allow for the upward movement of the connections when the cover is raised.
