In my copending application Serial No. 31,971, filed May 21, 1925, for household washing machines, I have described and claimed an improved machine for washing and sterilizing dishes and the like,,'including an improved top spray for such machines. Because of the construction of such improved washing machine, it is impossible to utilize the same'in its resent condition as asubstitute for the or inary kitchen sink, and, further, while the form of top spray therein shown and described is efiicient, it very often happens thatit is desirable to employ a spray that will deliver more water than 18 poss'ble in such a machine. The present invention, chine capable of being used as a substitute for a kitchen sink, performing either of the functions of a' dish washer or a sink, although not both functions simultaneously.

The chamber 17 connects with the basin 10, and at the upper portion of this chamber 17 is rovided a 'screen or sieve 36 in which collects garbage, grease, etc., that may be washed from the dishes, cutlery, or the like, located in the washing chamber. To the exit end of the pump above described is connected one end of a pipe or conduit 37, the .other end of which is secured in any suitable manner to the bottom of a modified T or elbow 38, and within this modified T or elbow and cooperating with a packing ring'39 therein is a pivotallymounted flap valve 40 which prevents entrance of fluid to the pipe or conduit 37 toward the pump, but does not prevent exit of fluid from such pipe. On the rear of the device the wall of the base 10 is provided with an orifice through which extends the threaded end 41 of the intermediate portion of the modified T or elbow 38, and on this threaded end is screwed a ring 42 .for making a tight joint between the casing 10 and the modified T or elbow 38. ,A passage through the threaded end 41 connects the interior of the modified T or elbow 38, and therefore the pipe or conduit 37, with the interior of thechamber formed by the members-10, 14 and 16. Threaded into an opening into the top of the modified T or elbow 38 is the lower end of a water distribution pipe or conduit 43 which extends upward] to a point adjacent to the member 16 an to the to secured an elbow 44, the other en of this elbow being secured to the member 16 by bolts 45, an orifice being provided in the rear portion or wall of the member or ring 16 communicating with the elbow. Located to the rear of the device and preferably forming part of the drainboard of the combined washing machine and sink is a member 46 to the front edges of which is pivotall mounted by hinges 47 a cover 48 provi ed on its interior surface, with a depending rin 49 of the same shape as the interior of the rin or member 16 and of such size as to fit within said rin or member 16, as clear}; shown in Fig. 2. he rear portion of this epending ring 49 accommodates the orifice 50 that communicates throu h the o ning in the ring or member 16 with the e w 44. It is obvious from the above description that, if water is forced through the pipe or conduit 37 by means of an impeller 20 of the pump, such water or other fluid will be forced through the member 41 into the lower part of the chamber formed by the members 10, 14 and 16 and will also be forced upward through the pipe 43 and elbow 44 into the chamber formed by the cover 48 and inner member 51 and such water or other fluid Wlll be forced downwardly through the erforations 54 in the form of a spray. he hollow threaded member 41 of the modified T or elbow 38 is of such shape as to receive the end of a manifold comprised essentially of a pipe 55 having connected thereto a plurality of laterally extending perforated pipes 56, the perforations in such pipes being on an upper portion thereof so as to direct a spray of water or other washing liquid upwardly in the tank composed of the members 10, 14 and 16. The manifold composed of the pipes 55 and 56 may readily be removed from the hollow portion 41 when it is desired to utilize the apparatus as an ordinary sink, by withdrawing the end of the manifold from the member 41. Secured to the rear portion of the ring 16 is a control switch 57 having a plun er formin part thereof extending througfi the mem r 16 and into the path of movement of a boss 58 formed on the depending ring 49 that is attached to the'cover plate 48. This control switch 57 is connected with any suitable source of power (not shown) and in the usual manner with a motor 33. As the manner in which such connections are made is not important as far as concerns the present invention, they have not been shown and will not be further described.
Screwed into the modified T or elbow 38 intermediate its top and bottom and connecting with the interior thereof is one end of a supply pipe 60, the other end of which is screwed into a T 61 provided with a stop plug 62 and having screwed into the upper portion thereof the lower end of a supply pipe 63, the upper end of this supply plpe being screwed into a T 64. From the above, it will be obvious that I may utilize the apparatus shown on the drawings and herein described as a dish washing machine which requires that the water he maintained at a-low level within the tank by filling the water chamber 17 and the lower part 10 of the tank 11 to a point determined by the tube 78 an may circulate such water b means of the impeller 20 of the pump t rough the manifold comprised of the pipes 55. and 56 and through the backboard 46 is a standpipe 73 provided at its lower end with through the upper spray cover manifold, including the spray chambers 52 and 53,-such pump, however, not being operable until the break point in the circuit of electric motor 33 is closed by the boss 58 on the member 49 engaging with the plunger of the control switch 57. It will also be apparent that I may utilize the apparatus as a substitute for the ordinary kitchen sink and may either maintain the level of fluid therein at the point predetermined by the pipe 78 and the slots 88 and 84 at a low point, such as .is found advisable when the device is used as a dish washing machine, or maintain it at a high level determined by the connectin pipe 79' and slots 89 and 85 by rotating t e tube or pipe 86 on the pipe 82 so as to throw the slots 88 and 84 out of registr and I ma empty the entire apparatus of uid by lifting the tube 82 by means of knob orhandle 83, .thus moving the valve 81 oil the valve seat 80.
While '1 have described the preferred form of down s ray, I may substitute for this preferred orm theform shown in detail in Fig. 7 wherein the sheet metal member 14 of the tank is secured to a modified form of ring 90, amodified form of cover 91 being employed and the modifiedform of ring 96 having an inwardly and downwardl extending lip 92 which partially shie ds a spray manifold 93 provided with a plurality of downwardly directed rforations 94 and this manifold is connecte with the pipe 43 by means of an elbow 95. This form of spray manifold is less liable toderangement and possible leakage than the form illus-;
trated'in the other figures on the drawings because of the fact that it is connected positively and permanently with the pipe 43 and does not depend for tight fitting on the biggie 47.
iIe I have shownand described the preferred embodiment of my invention somewhat in detail, it is to be understood that I may varythe sizeand arrangement of parts within wide limits without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: a
1. In a washing machine, a wash chamber means 'for' circulating a washing liquid theret-hrough under pressure, a drain pipe leading from the bottom of said chamber,
a drain pipe leading from the top of said chamber, a drain pipe leading from said chamber intermediate its top and bottom, a drschar e lpe having common connection with al 0 sald drain pipes, a valve movable longitudinally in said discharge pipe for i a control common to all of said drain pipes, a hollow stem on said valve and .o 11 through thebody thereof, said stem having apertures in alignment .with the top and intermediate dram pipes, and a sleeve movable over said stem, said sleeve having apertures therein for selective registry with said stem a ertures for drainage through said stem w on said valve is closed.
