By this arrangement, the sink pan is sealed by engagement with the portion 48 and also with the rubber portion 56. The sink pan 2% may be provided with a handle 50 for lifting the sink pan from thetub when it is desired to place articles in the deep tub for washing.
The sink'pan as shown includes side walls which are of thin gauge sheet metal material andare of uniform thickness from the upper peripheral edge of the pan. In order to provide a pan of this type construction-which is of sumcient rigidity that the side walls will not distort and fail to retain their original shape to effect sealing relation with the gasket 46 and the the drawings, the numeral 2t v a: of tub to metalv 40 and a return bend the bottom wall to provided a return bend porupper portion of the agitator for actuating said agitator.
The motor may be of continuous rotary type or of the oscillatingtype, or these two types combined. 'Motors of this type are well known and further description thereof is deemed unnecessary. If desired, the motor 66 may be mounted directly upon the upper surface of the bottom wall of the sink pan 24 for actuating the agitator. In this case a shorter shaft for the motor may be used.
The agitator has a circular base portion 84 and a vertically extending passage 66. This passage is in direct alignment with an outlet opening 68 in the sink pan 24. 'The opening 68 is covered by a removable plug 10. Thus, when it is desired,
to drain the sink pan, the plug 18 may be removed and the water in the sink will flow into the passage 66 whence it'passes to a drain con-' nection 12. Within the passage 66 is provided a bearing 14 which 'is preferably square in horizontal cross section for receiving the shaft 60 of motor 68. Immediately above the bearing, thepassage 66 diverges outwardly as at 16 to provide a definite taper for guiding the, shaft 60, which is preferably square in horizontal cross section so that asit approaches the bearing 14 it will be in proper alignment to be received therein. agitator isprovided with two blades 88. However, if desired, any additional number of blades may be provided. On the lower surface of the agitator is provided a bearing 86 which cooperates with the drain connection 12 to seal the tub;

The drain connection 12 is in open communication with the drain conduit 90 which is connected to the conventional drain pipe 82. This complctes a drain connection from the sink pan 24 to the drain pipe 82. However, in order to drain the tub 22, I provide a drainconnection 84 and drain conduit 68 which is connected to drain pipe 62 by a valve mechanism 88. The valve mechsnism is controlled by a rod I06 having a handle portion I82 above the drainboard surface 2'8. The handle I82 may be actuated to permit the water to flow from the tub 22 or retain it therein in the well known manner.
In Figs; 8 and-7, I have shown a modified form of an apparatus wherein the sink pan I24 is nested in the deep tub I28. This sink pan and tub correspond to the sink pan 24- and tub 22.
. The manner of'connection between the two is somewhat different, however. In this embodiment of the invention, the sink pan is provided with a laterally extended flange I28 which is The which permits open communication to the pan I24 and the tub I26 to serve as an overflow drain from the sink pan I24. To the side of the tub I28 is provided a casting I40 which has inwardly directed portion I which conforms to the curvature of the pan I24 for receiving drain water from the pan I24 through perforations I42 therein. Thus, the drain water from the pan may pass through the perforations I42 into casting I40, which has secured thereto a drainpipe I44. The
tub I26 has a drain connection I58 controlled by valve mechanism I62. For operation of the valve mechanism I62, I have provided a rod I60 which has a, handle portion I62 attached thereto extending above the drainboard of the tub. The drainpipe I44 leads to a conventional drainpipe I84 below the valve mechanism I62.
In Figs. 8 and 9 I have shown another form of agitating mechanism wherein a drain pipe I16 is secured to a drain connection I12 in the lowermost portion of the tub I14. The drainpipe I18 extends upwardly into the tub I14 and an agitator I16 is positioned within the tub I14 and surrounds the pipe I18. The agitator I18 includes a hollow passage I88 which surrounds the pipe I18. The
agitator includes a vertically extending tubular portion I82 to which is secured agitating vanes I84. A disc shaped member I88 is associated with the blades or vanes I84 in the tubular portion J82. Below the disc shaped member is a bearing I88 which cooperates with the drain connection to provide-bearing surfaces. portion" of the agitator is provided with a hollow portion I82 which is adapted for receiving a shaft of an electric motor (not shown) for driving the agitator in the similar manner to that disclosed in Fig.'5. Also, in the upper portion of the agitator is provided V-slots I94 for receiving any suitable projection, such as a pin (not shown) upon the agitating shaft of said electric motor so as to provide a driving connection between suchmotor shaft and the agitator. As 'will be noted, the agitator has a. passage extending throughout its vertical length, and this passage is in alignment with an outlet passage 208 of a removable sink pan 28I. Thus, drain water from the sink 2" may pass through hollow portion I92, passage 284, into the drain pipe I18, whence it passes through the drain casting I12 to the conventional drain.
From the foregoing, it will readily be apparent, that I have provided an improved combination tub, sink and washing apparatus wherein the adapted to engage a hollow rubber gasket member I36 for sealing the connection between the tub and sinkpan. The gasket I6! is provided with a tail portion 162 which is clamped to the tub by bolts I24. If desired, however, the tail portion 182 may be omitted and the hollow gasket I68 may be secured to the flange-I28 of pan I24 by j cement or other material. The pan I24 is provided with a raised portion I86 which carries a handle III. This raised portion is formed merely by conventional type of punch and die mechanism which inwardly depresses the portion I86 fromangular side wall I38. This leaves a space I68 sink and tub are effectively sealed, and that the sink may be made of thin gauge sheet metal ma terial without distortion, and that the sink may be readily removed to permit driving mechanism to engage the agitating mechanism in the tub, and that the agitating means is so designed as to readily receive the .drivingmechanism, and is provided with a hollow portion to facilitate the drainage of the sinktherethrough. Other types of resilient material may be used for the gaskets besides soft rubber, such as closely woven fabrics or other material.
In'Fig. 10 I have shown sink 200 and drain pipe-l10 connected by a removable funnel 2I0. This funnel may be of any desired shape for conducting the drainage from the sink to the drain pipe when the agitator I18 is not used.
In Figs. 11 and 12, I have shown apparatus similar to that shown in Figs. 6 and 7. In these figures of the drawings, 226 is the deep tub which corresponds to tub I26 and sink 228 corresponds to sink I24. In this embodimentof the invention, however, the sink 226 has secured thereto a casting- 230 which is V-shaped so that the lower end will be wide enough to receive the drainage from the sink through perforations 234 in the sink while the upper portion is wide enough to receive the overflow from the sink about its handle 238 and through space 240 in which the handle is pivoted. The tub 226 is cut away as at 244 to receive the casting 230. Thus, the sink removable from the tub. On opposite'sides of the casting 230 is provided gaskets 260 similar to the hollow gasket portion I30 shown in Fig. 'I. This gasket may be secured to flange tub, there is secured v I44. When it is desired to construct a sink pan like the one shown in Fig. 3 with a rolled bead about its upper-peripheral edge, it may be constructed as shown in Figs. l3 and 14. In these figures a sink pan 265 corresponds to sink pan 24, but has a bead 261 which is rolled inwardly. The bead is cut away at 210 to provide for receiving a handle 212. The handle 212 includes portions 214 pivoted underthe bead 261.
Although only a preferred form of the invention has been illustrated, and that form described in detail, it will be apparent to those skilled in th art that various modifications may bev made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or from the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. 'Washing apparatus comprising a tub having an opening, a drain pipe positioned in said opening and extending upwardly into said tub, a
sink positioned in the upper part of said tub and having a drain outlet, and hollow agitating means surrounding said pipe and having a portion directly thereover and in communication with said drain outlet.
2. A device of th character described comprising a-tub having an opening in its bottom wall, a drainpipe extending into said tub through said opening, agitating means surrounding said drainpipe in said tub, and a removable sink pan in the upper portion of the tub and having a drain outlet, the upper portion of said agitating means having a passage in communication with said drain outlet and said drainpipe and being constructed and arranged to receive driving mechanism for said agitating means.
