Abstract
724,877. Bogies for railway vehicles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1953 [Aug. 27, 1952], No. 22567/53. Class 103 (6). A railway bogie comprises a frame having side frame members and transom members, a bolster having longitudinallyspaced transverse arms resiliently supported on the side frame members, and friction means interposed between the bolster and the frame to damp lateral and vertical oscillations of the bolster with respect to the frame. As shown in Fig. 1, a bogie frame 6 has side frames 8 and transoms 10, the side frames 8 being supported on axles 4 by means of journal boxes 12. Sets of concentric helical springs 16 are interposed between the tops of the journal boxes and the side frames 8. A bolster 34 provided with transverse arms 36 is supported resiliently on the side frames 8 by means of helical springs 46, Fig. 8. Limited relative movement between the bolster and the frame 6 is provided by suspension bars 38 each pivotally attached at one end to a transverse bolster arm and at the other end being formed with a slot 42 to engage the shank of a bolt 44 fastened to a .transom 10. Each end of the arms 36 is provided with a stop 58 adapted to engage a snubber element 60 on each of the side frames 8 to limit lateral movement of the bolster with respect to the frame 6. Each of the side frames 8 has two end facing wear plates 51, preferably of steel, and two centre facing friction plates 52, for engagement, respectively, with wear plates 54, Fig. 10, attached to the arms 36 and with cylindrical plungers 72 of frictional brake lining material slidably mounted in the arms 36 and held resiliently against the plates 52. The journal boxes are guided vertically between pedestal jaws attached to the underside of the side frames 8. A liner 29, Fig. 5, and a filler plate 30 are secured to the sides of each pedestal jaw 14 by bolts 32.
