Abstract
724,478. Multiplex transmission. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 4, 1953 [May 22, 1952], No. 12296/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (4). Speech is transmitted over a channel 1 kilocycle wide by selecting two sub-bands corresponding to voiced and unvoiced sounds, e.g. 200-1200 and 1800-2800 cycles, shifting one or both sub-bands so that both occupy the same frequency range and transmitting them together with an identifying signal for controlling the restoration at the receiving end. A 3-channel system is described using channels 200-1200, 1800-2800 and 2800-3800 cycles. On channel 1, the voiced sounds (i.e. vowels and consonants like L, M, N) are sent unchanged, while unvoiced sounds (such as T, K, P) are shifted in frequency. On channel 2, the voiced sounds are shifted and the unvoiced sounds are unchanged. On channel 3 both are shifted but by different amounts. These results are effected by a switching relay which is controlled by a detector according as the instantaneous input consists of voiced or unvoiced sounds. The detector also controls an oscillator to send an identifying signal, e.g. 1290 or 1360 cycles for channel 1, and other frequencies within the range 1200-1800 cycles for channels 2 and 3. These signals are extracted at the receiver and control relays which in turn control frequencychanging apparatus for reconstituting the speech band. Several forms of detector are described depending on the different frequencies of voiced and unvoiced sounds and on the fact that voiced sounds are periodic and unvoiced sounds aperiodic.
