Abstract

724,414. Photographic type-composing. MONOTYPE CORPORATION, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1953, No. 4057/53. Class 98 (1). [Also in Group XVI] In a positioning mechanism for a character-bearing plate movable in two directions to position a desired character relatively to a lens in a photographic type-composing machine comprising a pair of oppositely movable positioning levers each furnished with a jaw co-operating with a stepped series of movable gauges each of which can be projected selectively into the path of the jaws, there is provided loosely mounted on and in advance of one of the jaws a supplementary jaw, and mechanism for moving the supplementary jaw into and out of operative position relatively to the gauges. Mounted pivotally on one of the primary jaws A<SP>3</SP>, Figs. 4, 5 and 8, of the matrix-case positioning mechanism is a supplementary jaw C having three pin-engaging recesses C<SP>1</SP>, the jaw C being pivoted by means of a rib C<SP>2</SP> projecting into a channel in a hood a in the jaw A<SP>3</SP>. The jaw C is in advance of the jaw A<SP>3</SP>, and is normally in a position to engage a projected gauge pin A. When air is admitted to a cylinder D<SP>3</SP> in response to a perforation in the record strip, a piston D<SP>2</SP> is raised and rocks a bar D to raise the jaw C into inoperative position, a spring D<SP>4</SP> returning it when the air supply is interrupted. Thus some or all of the pins may each position the matrix-case in one of two alternative positions, according as the jaw C is raised or lowered, whereby matrix-cases having more than fifteen columns may be controlled by fifteen gauge pins. If a fifteen-column matrix-case is used, a frame G<SP>4</SP> is manually moved to the right in Fig. 8, causing a wedge piece E to engage a lug D<SP>5</SP> on the bar D and lock the jaw C in its lower position, and also causing a sliding bar F<SP>1</SP> to act on a pin F and move it into position to block a rod attached to the matrix-case, so as to avoid over-travel of the latter. A large matrix-case has a nose arranged to pass under the frame G<SP>4</SP>, but the nose of a small case is arranged to abut the frame and move it to the right if the operator has neglected to do so.
