In an embossing machine for addressprinting and like printing plates with oppositely movable doublearmed type levers for displacing the patrix and matrix interconnected at one end by a toggle-pair the toggle joint of which is connected by a link to an operating lever pivoted on the machine casing, auxiliary displacing means are so arranged between the operating lever and one end of the matrix-displacing lever that the end of the matrix-displacing lever is positively conveyed by the operating lever into a pre-determined position, in which it is supported on a fixed point of the casing, prior to the embossing operation and prior to the completion of the patrix stroke. The levers 4, 5, Fig. 2, are pivoted at 6, 7 and caused to move together at their operating ends to displace the type stamps mounted in the type wheels 2, 3 to emboss the plate, the stamps in the wheel 2 being matrices and those in the wheel 3 patrices. The levers 4, 5 are actuated by an operating lever 12, the arrangement being such that movement of the upper end of the operating lever to the left first raises the selected matrix by means of a toggle 18, 19, pivoted to a fixed point 20 and connected to the lever 12 by an intermediate lever 21. When the matrix is in its raised position, the pivot pin 13 of the toggle lever 18 and the lever 4 becomes stationary, whereupon further movement of the lever 12 completes the lowering of the selected patrix through a toggle 15, 16 connected to the lever 12 through an intermediate lever 17. Reverse movement of the lever 12 moves the operating ends of the levers 4, 5 apart. In another form, Fig. 6, the lever 21 is pivoted to a disc 22 pivoted at 20 and having a guide slideway 23 to receive the pin 13. In a further form, Fig. 7, a lug 26 on the lever 12 constitutes the displacing mechanism for the lever 4, having a guide slideway 27 for a pin 28 on the lever 4.
