Abstract

724,332. Conductors. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. March 31, 1953 [April 5, 1952], No. 8889/53. Class 36. A transposed conductor for high frequency comprises a number of smaller conductors, each in the form of a helix which continually varies in diameter first in one direction, then in the other. The composite conductor may consist of a number of conducting wires or tapes 11 applied in the form of a flattened helix around an insulating strip 13, the pitch of each tape 11 being inversely proportional to the highest transmitted frequency. If the tapes 11 are not insulated, an insulating strip is applied over one or both sides of the sheet 13, which is then rolled up as tightly as possible. The tapes 11 are connected in parallel by applying a metal cap or disc to the end of the assembly. The conductor may be made by applying tapes 11 to an insulating core 20 of circular crosssection as it is extruded from machine 21, and then passing the core through rollers 27 which flatten it into sheet 13. The sheet passes through die 28 which rolls it up to form the completed conductor 10. Insulation 29 may be applied before the rolling process.
