Abstract

Water bonded compacted soil is stabilized by admixture with the soil of 1-20 per cent by weight of cement and between 0.05 and 1.0 per cent of a polymethine colouring matter of the general formula (ArNH. CH: CH-CH: C(OH). CH: NHAr)+ X-where X- is the anion of a strong acid and Ar is an aromatic residue free from sulphonic groups, and then compacting the mixture. To produce a road-way 2-10 per cent of cement may be used, and for the production of bricks the amount of cement depends on the soil e.g. 6-10 per cent for sandy soil, 8-12 per cent for silty soil, and 10-14 per cent for clay soil. The amount of water required to produce good bonding is 5-20 per cent. An example of the polymethine compound is hydroxyglutaconic aldehyde dianilhydrochloride (C6H5NH. CH:CH. CH:C(OH). CH: NHC6H5)+Cl-. Specification 680,921 [Group XXI] is referred to.
