Abstract

724,060. Fluid-pressure blasting cartridges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 7, 1953 [Dec. 5, 1952], No. 30895/52. Class 9(1). A fluid pressure blasting device comprising a pressure-resistant container 1 provided with a rupture disc 2 and an electrically actuated heating element 7 to actuate a gas-producing charge 5 is loaded with a charge consisting of a pulverulent intimate admixture comprising ammonium nitrate, one of the hydrated nitrates of metals from the group magnesium nitrate hexahydrate and aluminium nitrate nonahydrate and a non-explosive organic fuel. The fuel consists of dried vegetable carbohydrate material and the number of moles of combined water in the metal nitrate per mole of ammonium nitrate is between one and three, the proportion of fuel in the mixture being such that the gases from the charge and the heating element at the bursting pressure consist of steam, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. For a device in which the disc 2 ruptures at a pressure of 12 tons per sq. inch the molar ratio lies between 1À4 and 2À5 moles combined water in the hydrate per mole ammonium nitrate. The fuel may be wood flour, cereal meal, or a mixture of flours, or starch and the heating element may produce sufficient hot gas to raise the pressure above 8 atmospheres in the device. Several examples of compositions are given. Specification 431,936 is referred to.
