Abstract
724,017. Tubular heat-exchangers. WINN, S. June 22, 1953 [June 30, 1952 ; Nov. 13, 1952], Nos. 16397/52 and 28643/52. Class 64 (3). In a tubular heat-exchanger (e.g. a radiator) a compound tube plate comprising a layer or body of resilient material bonded to or enveloping a rigid plate, is secured in position on the open side of a header box by providing on the tube plate a ductile periphal lip which, when the tube-plate is offered up to close the header box opening, extends outwardly beyond a flange provided on the box, the plate being finally secured in position by folding the lip portion of the plate over the flange on the header box. As shown in Fig. 4 the portion 5 of the rigid part 2 of the compound tube plate extends beyond the flange 4 of the header box 1 and may have a layer 6 of resilientmaterial bonded thereto which layer may be an extension of the resilient portion 3 of the compound plate. The extension 5 and resilient layer 6 are folded over the flange 4 of the header and are pressed down firmly to form a fluid-tight joint (e.g. as indicated bv chain-lines in the Figure). Fig. 7 shows an alternative arrangement in which the compound tube plate 13, 16 is received and located in a recess formed by suitably shaping the header box flange 12. In this arrangement a further rigid plate 14 is provided the marginal portion 15 of which extends beyond the header box flange and may be covered by a layer 17 of resilient material which may be an extension of the resilient material 16 of the tube plate. The plate portion 15 and resilient layer 17 are folded as before to form the joint. The radiator tubes 7 (Fig. 4) extend between upper and lower headers which are spaced apart by pillars 9 (see also Fig. 5 not shown) secured to the compound plate (Fig. 4) or to the header box (Fig. 7). The ends of the tubes are received in holes provided in the resilient material of the tube plate. Specification 716,623 is referred to.
