Abstract
A spinneret consists of a number of fine-bore metal tubes which have been fitted into the holes of a perforated rigid metal plate and brazed or welded to the plate in order to hold them rigidly in position. The tubes may be made by drawing down thicker tubing. The tubes, after being welded or brazed into the metal plate, may be broached or drilled for greater accuracy. The extended ends of the tubes may have been removed, e.g. by grinding. A hole of larger diameter in the internal face of the spinneret may taper into the fine tube which constitutes the final extrusion orifice. Alternatively, grooves may be cut in the internal face of the spinneret to guide the spinning solution or melt to the fine-bore tubes. In the example a spinneret for melt spinning is made by drilling 33 holes of 3.2 mm. diameter in a stainless-steel plate, 7.6 cm. diameter and 6.4 mm. thick. Into each of these holes a mild-steel tube 9.6 mm. long, an external diameter just to fit the hole and an internal diameter of 0.22 mm. is fitted and brazed into place. The projecting lengths of tubing are then ground off. The spinnerets may be used in wet, dry or melt spinning and are cheaper to manufacture than spinnerets in which holes of similar length have been drilled.
