Abstract
723,652. Bookbinding machines. BOOK MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Sept. 22, 1952 [Sept. 28, 1951], No. 22736/51. Class 16. In a bookbinding machine in which the unbound books are conveyed past means for glueing the books, deforming means are provided between which the rear parts are bent over in one direction during their travel so as to fan over the backs to expose simultaneously narrow marginal parts of all the sheets of each book to the glueing means. Books 1 are fed between endless conveyers 2, 3, past a rotary cutter 15 for roughening the backs, glue applying means 4, 5, as described in Specification 723,649 and continuously fed glue-coated lining material 7 the margins of which are folded over by the flanges of a roller 12 against marginal parts of the top and bottom of the book. Mull or open mesh fabric from a spool 4 may also be supplied. Before the first glueing stage the. back edges are fanned downwardly to expose a very narrow margin of each sheet by means of a vertically adjustable longitudinal bar 42 with a bevelled and inclined lower edge in co-operation with a bevelled part 44a of a lower guide plate 44. To maintain the back edge of the deformed book perpendicular to the horizontal plane of travel a roller 32 is located in advance of the glue applying means 4, its pressure against the fanned sheets being adjustable by means of a screw 39 which is secured to a slide carrying the roller. As the books travel past roller 32 a spring-loaded upper guide bar 51 secured to a vertically adjustable carriage 52 supporting conveyer 2 assists in the gradual return of the sheets to normal position. The width of the book fanned may be ¢ to ¥ in. resulting in about 5/1000 in. exposure of the sheets. Specification 656,931 is referred to.
