Abstract

723,552. Electric heating resistances and panels. COX, D. B. Jan. 30, 1952, No. 2522/52. Class 39 (3) [Also in Group XXXVI]. A low temperature electric heating element comprises a preformed unitary flexible sheet 21 of lead foil less than 0.002 inch thick attached to a backing of insulating material and then formed with slits 25 arranged to provide a narrow elongated tortuous current path, and a slightly thicker piece of flexible metal 27 is secured to the foil and has a supply cable 28 attached thereto, the foil or the foil and backing being enclosed between layers of insulating material e.g. paper adhered thereto. The backing may be a thin flexible insulating sheet attached to or laminated with the foil. The lead may be alloyed with 1-4 per cent of antimony or tin or both, or it may have on both sides a thin coating of tin to facilitate rolling the foil. After mounting the foil on paper, slits 25 are formed in it alternately from opposite sides to form a zig zag path by cutting or by fusing the foil, leaving the paper backing intact. Current is supplied to the opposite ends of the heater by cables 28 soldered to strips 27 of copper or brass 0.003 inch thick secured to the foil by heat and pressure using a suitable flux. Insulating and covering sheets provided with designs are adhered to one or both sides of the heater and are rigid or flexible e.g. of paper, fabric or woven or felted glass fibre. The width of the upper and lower course of the strip may be widened to receive the reinforcing contact strip or tab, which may be secured as in Specification 703,584. Radiant heating panels so formed are used on floors, walls or ceilings. The outer decorated face of the panel may serve as wall paper. The lower end of the panel may extend beneath a baseboard and the upper end beneath a moulding, thus concealing, the supply wires. To form a floor covering, both sides of the panel are coated with an adhesive and attached to tiles or linoleum. The panels may be cemented to the outside of tanks or to containers or equipment, e.g. airborne equipment.
