Abstract
<PICT:0723508/III/1> In the production of hydrogen cyanide by the inter-reaction of ammonia, a gaseous hydrocarbon and a gas comprising free oxygen at a temperature between 750 and 1250 DEG C., in the presence of a platinum metal or platinum metal alloy catalyst, the reaction chamber is constructed of an austenitic iron alloy having a total non-ferrous metal content of at least 26 per cent by weight and consisting principally of from 16 to 30 per cent chromium and 10 to 22 per cent. nickel in austenitic stainless steel proportions together with the usual amounts of carbon, silicon and manganese, the proportion of carbon being sufficiently low to prevent carbide precipitation at the granular interstices. As shown the reaction chamber comprises conical stainless steel sections 2 and 3 having flanges 4, 4 between which are disposed a lower annular catalyst holder plate 5 and a top annular holder plate 6. The lower annular plate has an annular recess 8 for supporting a layer 9 of platinum metal catalyst while the upper annular plate has an annular projection 10 which fits into the recess 8. The reaction is initiated by starter coil 28 which is heated to a red heat by the passage of a current therethrough.
