Abstract

3b -Hydroxy-pregnane-11 : 20-dione is prepared by the selective hydrogenation of pregnane 3 : 11 : 20-trione in the presence of Raney nickel as catalyst. In examples, (1) methanolic pregnane - 3 : 11 : 20 - trione is pressure hydrogenated with Raney nickel, and 3b -hydroxypregnane - 11 : 20 - dione isolated after repeated recrystallization. Other examples describe the use of ethanol and iso-propyl ether as solvents under various reaction conditions. The 3b - hydroxy - pregnane - 11 : 20 - dione may be converted to the 3b -acetoxy compound by the method of Specification 594,878.
