[Also in Group XIII] In a steam boiler comprising essentially a steam-and-water drum 36, steam-generating tubes 39, and downcomers 41, small solid particles and other impurities in the steam are removed by the passage of the steam through a series of grid trays 45, each formed for example of spaced rectangular bars, in opposition to a flow of relatively pure water such as condensate from the plant using the steam, normal feedwater or, as shown, condensate resulting from contact of the flowing steam with horizontal tubes 47 leading from a feedwater inlet header 48. The trays are mounted within a peripherally closed column having side walls 42 extending substantially the length of the drum, and in one specific example they are spaced 4 inches apart and are each constituted by bars which are 1 inch wide and “ inch thick and are spaced 1“ inch centre to centre to provide slots “ inch wide between adjacent bars. Chevron-shaped fins constituting a steam-and-water separator 46 may be mounted on the tubes 47, and baffles 50 are preferably disposed immediately below the steam outlets 38 of the drum. The steam-generating tubes 39 discharge against a baffle 40 which may depend below the level 37 of water in the drum and be provided with outlets leading to associated cyclone or other steam separators.
