In a visible index system comprising a paper or other sheet support 5.formed with a plurality of parallel slits 4 arranged, for example, in multi-columnal form and a plurality of slips 1 of paper, cardboard or the like for mounting in the slits 4, each slip 1 includes an upper part 6, having a length greater than the slits 4, intended to receive the index matter to be displayed, the upper part 6 being of a depth and the slits 4 being so spaced that the index matter on all the slips will be on view, each slip 1 including a lower tongue portion 3, of relatively large area in relation to the upper part 6, intended to receive typewritten or written matter relating to its index heading, the tongue portion 3 entering the slit 4 and being therefore hidden from view. Each slip 1 is preferably of duplex form as shown, folded along its centre line 2 which then becomes the upper edge. The tongue portions 3 are tapered to assist entry into the slits 4 and the slits 4 also have an opening 7 to assist entry of the slips 1. The support 5 may have a title and to facilitate typing the title along the bottom of the sheet, a line of perforations 8 just below may be provided and the portion below torn off after typing. The slips 1 may be colour marked for index purposes,. for example, they may have different colours on opposite faces, so that refolding along the line 2 shows a different colour. The slips 1 may be blanked out from a sheet of paper or cardboard, with the edges defined by lines of perforations, and the index matter may be typed before removal of a slip.
