Abstract

[Also in Groups X and XXXI] In a vehicle having a compression ignition engine, a perforate ceiling is arranged below the roof of the vehicle body to form with the roof an unobstructed ventilation passage which is connected by a hollow member and ducting, which has a pulsation damping portion, with the air induction manifold of the engine whereby air is extracted from the interior of the body by the engine. As shown the invention is applied to a double deck omnibus, an elbow 12 of the air induction manifold of the engine 11 being connected by a flexible tube 13 and a connection 14 to the ducting 15 built into the corner between the left rear end of the driver's cab 16 and the lower deck front window panel 17. The ducting 15 which may be fitted with a venturi and has a cross sectional area equal to that of the induction air manifold, is connected to a resonance box 20, which has vertical baffles 22....25 radiating from an inlet orifice 26. To the orifice 26 is connected a tube 30 which is connected by a resilient tube 31 to a conduit 32 housed within a vertical structural member between the two upper deck front windows. The conduit 32 is connected to a passage 33 in the central region of the space between the front portion of the roof and the adjacent ceiling. The passage leads to a longitudinal extending central ventilation passage defined by the perforate ceiling 34 below the roof 35 and longitudinal members 36, 37. The cross sectional areas of the passage 33 and the ventilation passage are equal to that of the induction air manifold and the cross sectional area of the perforations two to three times thereof. Alternatively the upper and lower decks may each have a perforate ceiling providing two ventilating passages separately connected to the induction air manifold. The invention may be applied to a vehicle having an under floor engine or an enclosed van for the conveyance of food. Specification 660,204, [Group X], is referred to.
