Abstract

A process for the production of spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises adding to molten cast iron, containing more than 4 per cent carbon and less than 1 per cent silicon, a substance promoting the formation of spheroidal graphite to produce an iron of a hypereutectic structure. The spheroidal graphite promoting substance may be calcium, or magnesium-silicon alloy and/or cerium mischmetal, and may be introduced into the melt with the exclusion of air, e.g. it may be introduced into the bottom of a ladle in a container. The iron produced may be annealed to give a tensile strength of 100 kg. per sq. mm.
