Abstract

721,910. Operating clutches. T.I. (GROUP SERVICES), Ltd. May 29, 1953 [June 12, 1952; Jan. 1, 1953], Nos. 14817/52 and 28/53. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXII] Rolling mill rolls 1, Fig. 1, are connected to a continuously rotating power source 8 through dog clutches 9 which are disconnected for removal of the work &c., and are re-engaged by driving the rolls through a separate driving means until the speeds of the clutch discs are the same. In one example the rolls are driven by an auxiliary motor 11 through gears 12, the motor also being used to reduce pressure on the clutch teeth before disengagement. In another example the rolls have an auxiliary drive through sun and planet pinions 13, 14, Fig. 2, of a differential gear which becomes operative when the planet gear casing 15 is held stationary by a manually-operated hydraulic brake 22. Phase adjustment of the clutch discs is obtained by partially rotating the brake back plate 23 and thereby the differential housing 15 by means of a manually-controlled hydraulic ram 28, Fig. 3, the correct phase being determined by the engagement of an actuating member 37 and switch 36 carried by discs 34, 35 coupled through gears 39-42 to the clutch discs 9 and operating the hydraulic clutch-engaging mechanism through an electromagnetic valve. In this example, pressure on the clutch teeth is relived for release of the clutch by a manually-controlled pneumatic ram 30 which also partially rotates the brake back plate 23. A separate small motor 44 and brake 45 are used for inching.
