Abstract
721,752. Ejection seats for aircraft. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT. CO., Ltd. Aug. 19, 1952, [Aug. 30, 1951], No. 20508/51. 'Class 4. [Also in Group XXXIII A telescopic ejection gun for an ejection seat of an aircraft is provided with a shock absorber consisting of a stack of independent hollow rings against which a moving part of the gun, towards the end of its stroke, contacts and distorts the walls of said rings, so that the kinetic energy of the moving part will be absorbed or damped out partly by deformation of the walls of the rings and partly by compression of the air enclosed within the rings. The gun comprises three telescopic cylinders 1, 2, 3, of which the outer cylinder 3 is closed at its lower end by a head 18 and end cap 19, releasably attached to the aircraft structure 17 by a spring loaded locking catch 25, and at its upper end carries a flanged collar 26. The inner cylinder 1 is closed at its upper end by a body 4, which encloses a cartridge 5 and a firing pin 13, and is releasably secured to a cross beam 10 of the ejector seat frame. The intermediate cylinder 2 which floats between the cylinders 1 and 2, carries a flanged collar 32 and a stack of shock absorbing rings 31 surround the cylinder 2 between the flanged rings 26 and 32. Each ring may be formed from metal tubing with welded ends and the rings absorb the shock of ejection partly by distortion of the walls of the rings and partly by compression of the air enclosed within each ring.
