Abstract

Methyl methacrylate is bulk polymerized in the presence of methyl methacrylate polymer and, as catalyst, a mixture of a peroxide, such as benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide, at least a trace of a copper compound, such as copper oxide, sulphate, methacrylate, or oleate, and a mercaptide accelerator selected from zinc, cadmium, lead, bismuth, alkaline earth metal, and alkali metal salts or complexes formed with tertiary aliphatic mercaptans, such as tert.-dodecyl, tert.-hexdecyl, tert.-octyl, and tert.-butyl mercaptans. The monomeric methyl methacrylate may be employed in conjunction with a minor proportion of another polymerizable monomer such as methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, and chlorostyrene, and may also contain a stabilizer such as hydroquinone. The polymer component may be a homopolymer of methyl methacrylate or a copolymer thereof with a minor proportion of another monomer, such as other methacrylic monomers, styrene, and chlorostyrene. The process may be used in the preparation of dental prostheses and fillings.
