721,589. Vices. HORN, L. Jan. 18, 1951, No. 1446/51. Class 61. In a vice having a fixee jaw 2 and a sliding jaw 3 operated for quick clamping adjustment by a spindle 6 provided with a fine pitch thread 5 and a quick pitch thread 7 of opposite hand, the nut 9 for the quick action thread may be locked against rotation in its bearing or may be rotated in its bearing to allow the jaw 3 to be moved exclusively by the thread 5. The quick pitch thread 7 moves out of the nut when clamping pressure is applied whereupon the shoulder 10 at the end of the thread engages the outer face 11 of the nut and slides around it on continued turning of the spindle so that only the fine pitch thread applies the final clamping pressure to the work. A projection 12 at the end of the nut ensures re-engagement of the thread 7 with that of the nut on unclamping the jaws. The nut 9 is locked in its bearing by a pair of clamping members 15 drawn together by a bolt 16: on loosening the bolt the bush becomes rotatable. An adjusting ring 14 holds the nut 9 in position. To move the jaw 3 exclusively by the screw 5, the spindle 6, nut 9 and-operating handle 18 are connected to move as one member by reversing the handle 18 so that projections 20 engage in corresponding grooves 19 in the nut. In a modification the movable jaw is in tension and not under compression.
