Abstract

720,479. Eye-protectors. SVENSKA AEROPLAN AKTIEBOLAGET. Nov. 14, 1961 [Nov. 16, 1950; June 15, 1951], No. 26639/51. Class 97 (1). [Also in Groups XI, XXXII and XXXVIII] In a vehicle lighting system (see Group XI) the field of view of the driver is opened and closed simultaneously with the intermittent energization of the headlights by a Venetian blind type of screen 18 adjustably pivoted to the windscreen and comprising a plurality of parallel thin metal bands 38 occupying the whole or a portion only of a rectangular frame and adapted to be oscillated about their longitudinal axes:' The ends of the bands are narrower than the middle parts and are clamped in the C- sectioned side members 34 of the frame between distance-pieces 44, Fig. 4, each of which has an offset part with a stud 46 which passes through a hole in the end of a band 38 and enters a recess 48 in the adjacent distance - piece. Rubber fillets are disposed between the distance-pieces and the frame. The bands are held under tension by nuts 52 on the ends of the two horizontal tubular members 30, 32 of the frame. The bands are oscillated by an electro-dynamic device 98 secured to the upper horizontal frame member 30 and comprising a fixed magnet and a movable coil energized by electric current pulses. The movable coil is connected by a link and lever to a shaft 70 rotatably mounted in rubber-lined bearings in members 72 secured to the frame. The oscillating movement of the shaft 70 is transmitted to the metal bands 38 by two pairs of vertical ribs 62 which are connected at their upper ends to pins in rubber-lined bearings in arms 64 on the ends of the shaft 70 and at their lower ends to pins in rubber-lined bearings in arms 76 rotatably mounted on spindles 82 secured to the lower horizontal frame member 32. Each rib has a longitudinal rubber fillet with transverse parallel grooves in which the edges of the bands are engaged so that as one rib of a pair moves longitudinally and the other rib of the same pair moves in the opposite sense, the middle portions of the bands are rocked about their longitudinal axes. The frequency of operation of the screen is high enough to provide continuous non-flickering vision.
