Abstract
720,426. Making electric lamps and similar devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 30, 1952 [June 30, 1951], No. 16402/52. Class 39 (2) A leading-in wire 3 extendirig upwardly from the bulb or envelope 1a of an electric lamp or similar device prior to capping is set in readiness to receive a cap by a device comprising a pair of scissorlike arms 24, 25 (the latter being shown with an intermediate break in Fig. 1) pivotally mounted for movement in a horizontal plane upon a crosshead 26 which is mounted for vertical reciprocable movement, the operative ends of the scissor arms being provided with resiliently-mounted gripping members which grip the leading-in wire whereupon the crosshead is moved upwardly to stress the wire and set it into a straight vertical position. The crosshead 26 is guided by a pair of vertical rods 30, 31 supported by a rigid block 32 and is reciprocated by vertical movement of a spindle 35 linked to a cam-controlled connecting rod 36, the spindle 35 being slidable within the crosshead and provided with a pair of fixed collars or stops 37, 38 spaced to provide a lost motion before impinging on the crosshead to effect upward or downward movement of the latter. A wedgeshaped member 39 mounted on the upper end of the spindle 35 is arranged to engage rollers 40, 41 on the extremities of the scissor arms 24, 25 to effect the closing of their operative ends against the tension of a spring 29 connected between the arms rearwardly of their pivots 27, 28. Fig. 3 shows the outer or operative ends of the arms 24, 25 which carry inwardly directed V-shaped combing members 20, 21 and, above those, a pair of gripping members 22, 23. The combing members are so dimensioned that, when closed, they confine the wire within the apices of the notches without gripping it. The gripping member 23 is fixed rigidly to the arm 25 by a bracket 60, but the co-operating member 22 is mounted on a pivot 62 carried by a fixed bifurcated bracket 61 and has an arm connected to a tensioned spring 63 which tends to swing the member 22 forwardly, this effect being controlled by an adjusting screw 64. The co-operating gripping faces of the members 22, 23 are at 66 and 67 respectively, and the member 22 is adjusted so that it is forced to pivot back slightly when the scissor arms swivel together. Thus the leading-in wire is gripped and given a sharp pull when the crosshead 26 moves upwards. As shown, the bulb holders comprise a series of pairs of jaws 6, 7 pivotally mounted on base plates 5, the undersides of which are secured to an endless chain conveyer 11 operating between a pair of track rails 12, 13.
