Abstract

720,039. Buoyant garments. SHAW, M. Nov. 5, 1952 [April 8, 1952; June. 27, 1952], Nos. 8924/52 and 16208/52. Class 141. A buoyant garment incorporates material which is buoyant by virtue of air entrapped within it, e.g. wool and other fibres and which may itself be buoyant, e.g. kapok and foamed latex, enclosed in a woven textile material which is permeable to air but impermeable to water. As shown in Fig. 3, bathing trunks 1 have a buoyant pad 2 at the front secured to a piece of cotton cloth 4. The pad contains a filling of kapok in a fabric envelope enclosed within a two-layer covering of water-impermeable fabric. The stitched seams are sealed by waterproof adhesive tape 10. A ladies' swimming costume may have buoyant structures secured between the outer layer and a lining in the upper and lower parts of the front. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, a life-saving waistcoat has inside pockets 18 closed by fasteners 19 and enclosing buoyant pads 20.
