719,907. Sewing-machines. BERNARD, S. S. L. Oct. 22, 1952 [Oct. 23, 1951], No. 26567/52. Class 112 [Also in Group VIII] Pieces of fabric of synthetic thermoplastic material are joined by simultaneously sewing and welding the edges whereby the fabric is prevented from fraying in the region of the seams. As shown, the smaller arm 7 of a sewing-machine presser foot 2 is provided with a point 3 surrounded by an electrical heating resistance protected by a casing 1. As fabric is sewn by a needle 5 in the usual manner, the heated point 3 cuts the sewn edges at a short distance from the seam and at the same time welds and trims the edges. The heating of point 3 may be synchronized with the starting of the machine motor so as to avoid overheating. Point 3 may be fixed, pivoting, or interchangeable; or it may be replaced by a blade or wire.
