Abstract
719,885. Friction clutches. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. July 15, 1952, No. 17836/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Groups XXXIV and XXXV] In a clutch comprising relatively - rotatable magnetic members movable axially towards each other by electromagnetic means. a magnetic fluid mixture of powdered solid lubricant such as graphite and magnetic material such as iron is maintained between the members during rotation, and one of the members has a friction facing composed of a wear and heat-resistant friction substance, such as copper, graphite, tin, zinc or lead, having a relatively-high magnetic reluctance interspersed with particles of magnetic material such iron of relatively-low reluctance, the overall reluctance of the facing being at least three times that of. the magnetic members. As shown, the armature presser plate 14 is connected to the'driving casing 28, having the magnet coil 18, by spring strips 40, and each of several intermediate discs 16, splined on the driven shaft and alternating with discs 100 splined in the casing 28, has the friction facing 52 bonded or otherwise secured on both sides. Magnetic fluid mixture contained in the casing 28 is distributed between the engaging surfaces through inclined slots 66 in the discs 16 and linings 52 by means of scoops 68. Alternatively, a single disc 16 may be employed, or the armature plate 14 may constitute the driven member and have the friction facing secured thereto. Specification 677,534 is referred to.
