Class 38(3) An electric motor 1 driving a chain grate stoker is supplied with intermittent alternating-current through a contactor 2 having an operating coil 3, and the main supply is fed through a selector switch 4 to a number of unit switches 7A-7F. A continuously rotating pilot motor 5 drives a cam 6 about which the unit switches are uniformly distributed, so that each switch is closed for a part of the rotation of the cam. Ganged isolating switches. 8A-8F are connected to corresponding switches 7A-7F, and the selector switch 4 operates in such a manner that a selected number of isolating switches are closed and the rest are open so that a similar number of unit switches are effective and the remainder non-effective, whereby the motor is energized during each revolution of the cam according to the ratio of the number of effective to the number of non-effective switches. Preferably, the cam is dimensioned so that, when one unit switch has been closed, it will not re-open until the next unit switch is closed. The cam may be replaced by relatively rotating commutators and brushes.
