Abstract

Polychlorocyclohexanes such as benzene hexachloride are dehydrochlorinated to give mixtures of isomeric polychlorobenzenes by contacting the polychlorocyclohexane at an elevated temperature, e.g. 180 DEG -350 DEG C. with an anion exchange resin. Preferably the reaction is carried out at 220 DEG -250 DEG C. in the presence of 0.01 per cent to 4 per cent of the resin. Many types of anion exchange resin are specified. Dehydrochlorination of benzene hexachloride according to the invention produces 1 : 2 : 4- and 1 : 2 : 3-trichlorobenzene. In an example benzene hexachloride is heated at 250-270 DEG C. in the presence of an "Amberlite" (Registered Trade Mark) anion exchange resin to give trichlorobenzenes; similarly dehydrochlorination of monochlorobenzene hexachloride and dichlorobenzene hexachloride gives tetrachlorobenzene and pentachlorobenzene respectively. A comparative experiment using powdered iron as a catalyst in place of an anion exchange resin is described.
