Abstract

<PICT:0719114/III/1> Fabrics are cleaned by subjecting them first to steam under pressure, then to a detergent solution under pressure to form an emulsion with the impurities, and finally to a dry-cleaning solvent to remove the emulsion and impurities. Water-soluble and solvent-soluble impurities are thus both removed from the fabrics. In a suitable apparatus, the fabric 15 is placed on an endless wire screen conveyer 10 at a point 11, the conveyer 10 moving clockwise around rollers 12. A similar conveyer 13 moves in a counterclockwise direction around rollers 14, the fabric passing therebetween. Nozzles 16 direct sprays of steam against the top and bottom of the fabric, preferably for a fraction of a second. A steam pressure of 50-125 lbs. per sq. in., preferably 80-100 lbs per. sq. in., may be used. Nozzles 17 then direct sprays of detergent solution against the top and bottom of the fabric, also preferably for a fraction of a second. Enough detergent is directed on to the fabric to saturate it. The pressure of the detergent solution may be 75-200 lbs. per sq. in., preferably 150 lbs. per sq. in. Finally the fabric passes to a rinsing chamber 18 provided with solvent nozzles 19 directed against the fabric as before. The cleaned fabric then passes out of the apparatus for drying. The fabrics to be cleaned include garments and rugs. The detergents may comprise the usual dry-cleaning soaps with or without adjuvants such as pine oil or ammonia.
