Abstract

718,976. Pipe and rod joints. BAKER OIL TOOLS, Inc. Dec. 13, 1951, No. 29215/51. Class 99 (1). A joint for pipes or rods particularly adapted for attaching the tubing string B, Fig. 2, of an oil well to the tubular member 10 of a well packing device comprises a screwthreaded coupling 23, 31 adapted to be connected by longitudinal non- rotary assembly of the parts and to be disconnected by unscrewing. The threads 23, 31 are left-handed so that the joints of the tubing string e.g. C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> having the usual right-hand threads are not disconnected. A spigot member 26, screwed into the tubing string sleeve 25, and adapted to engage in the socket member 10 and be sealed by packing rings 43, carries slidably thereon a sleeve 27 having a number of longitudinal slots 29 extending over the greater part of its length. The slotted end of the sleeve has threads 31 which in the unstressed condition of the sleeve engage the threads 23 of the socket. The threads 31 are of the buttress type so that, when the string B is stabbed into the socket, the sleeve is contracted as permitted by a tapered portion 33 of the spigot, and the latter moves inwards until stopped by coacting shoulders 41, 42, the sleeve segments then springing outwards to engage the thread 23. The string is then retracted to bring inclined shoulders 36, 37 on spigot and sleeve into contact. to maintain the screwthreads in engagement. Keys 45 project from the spigot into the slots 29 whereby the tubing string may be released by unscrewing. In a modification the sleeve 27a, Figs. 7, 8 has a single dividing slot 50 and a number of flutes 51 to give flexibility. An annular projection 54 engages a recess 53 in the sleeve when the latter is contracted..Projections 54, 56 expand the sleeve when the tubing string is retracted, a shoulder 57 preventing undue expansion of the sleeve and binding of the threads. A key 66 secured at one side of the slot 50 extends into a groove 67 of the spigot 26a. The joint is otherwise similar to that of Fig. 2 and operates in the same manner. In a modified form of the joint of Fig. 1 the spigot and sleeve have a number of buttress-shaped coacting annular projections.
