Abstract
<PICT:0718946/III/1> Oxides or sulphides of the metals of Groups V and VI of the Periodic Table, e.g. molybdenum, chromium, tungsten, vanadium, uranium and tantalum are deposited on a catalyst support, e.g. alumina in the form of finely divided particles by a continuous process in which the catalyst support is maintained as a dense fluidized bed in a treating zone under conditions such that metallic oxide or sulphide is liberated from an added solid substance containing the metal, withdrawing catalyst support particles together with the deposited metal oxide, and adding catalyst support particles to the dense bed. In a preferred embodiment of the process for the preparation of a molybdena-alumina catalyst containing 2-30 per cent. by weight of molybdena, the treating zone 10 is divided into two fluidized belts 11 and 12, supported on grids 13 and 22 and separated by a gas space in such a way that catalyst particles may flow from the upper to the lower bed through conduit 19. The lower fluidized bed is maintained at 1000-1400 DEG F. preferably 1125 DEG -1400 DEG F. whilst the upper bed is maintained at a somewhat lower temperature, e.g. 900 DEG F. or lower. Alumina is introduced at 14 and a raw flotation concentrate of molybdenite which has been previously roasted in air is introduced at 16, the finished catalyst being withdrawn through 23. The fluidizing gas introduced at 21 may be air or a combustion gas stream and it may contain water vapour. Ammonium molybdate may be used as the metal compound. The process may be applied during the regeneration of a fouled catalyst used in a hydroforming process. Promoters may be present in the catalyst.
