Abstract

718,845. Washing granular material. MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR KOLENBEWERKING STAMICARBON N.V. Sept. 19, 1952 [Sept. 24, 1951], No. 23594/52. Class 82(2) Mixtures of particles of different specific gravities are separated into fractions corresponding to a certain specific gravity of suspension in a separating suspension utilizing magnetically susceptible particles, the suspension having a specific gravity lower than the specific gravity of the lighter fraction to be separated. The light fraction obtained from the specific gravity separator is treated in a classifier (which separates according to settling rate). The classifier yields a fraction containing virtually all the light fraction, and one containing nearly all the suspension medium. The latter is returned to the process, whereas the former is treated magnetically to recover any suspension therefrom. The heavy fraction obtained from the separator is also treated magnetically to recover suspension. The suspension should be as stable as possible, one having 85 per cent. by weight of the particles smaller than 60 microns being mentioned. The separator may be a hydrocyclone or a jig. The classifier may be a hydrocyclone, a jig or a Dow classifier. If either of the two latter are used the suspension should be fed to them in a demagnetized condition. The cyclone 11 delivers the light fraction to a classifier 17 which returns the suspension particles direct to the receiver 7 via a collecting vessel 21. The classifier delivers the light fraction particles to two magnetic separators 19. 20, the latter working on the non-magnetic residue of the first. Similarly the heavy fraction is passed through the magnetic separators 13, 14. The medium recovered by the magnetic separators is returned by a thickener 22 to the receiver 7 into which new suspension and the material to be separated are also passed. The pump 10 supplies the mixture to the separator 11. A coarser range of particles than those dealt with in this process may be separated in a sink-and-float process and the media for both processes may be recovered by means common to both processes. The cyclone 11 .used in the process of the invention is preferably that disclosed in Specification 590,481. Specification 704,890 also is referred to.
