Abstract

718,639. Filtering liquids. HOLLAND, A. A. April 30, 1952 [May 7, 1951], No. 10871/52. Class 46 A travelling band filter comprises a filter belt 35, Fig. 1, on to which sludge is fed, mounted on rollers 36, 37 of a frame 1 and supported during a portion of its horizontal run by a portion of a travelling band or mat 2 of interconnected trough-shaped trays 6 mounted on sprockets 3, 4 of the frame 1 and having suction means, e.g. a box 24, whereby filtrate is withdrawn from the trays beneath the portion of the filter belt in contact therewith. The trays, which include grids 14, Fig. 4, and upwardly extending curved end walis 18, are connected together by links 19 and are bolted to a flexible belt 7 having apertures 13 in register with openings 12 in the floors of the trays 6. Spaces between adjacent side walls 10 are sealed with packing, and the links 19 carry rollers 21 running on tracks 22 and engaging the sprockets 3, 4 which are driven so as to maintain the speed of the mat 2 equal to that of the fi'ter belt 35. In operation sludge at the feed end of the belt 35 in contact with the trays 6 is distributed by an upward blast of air from a duct 33 and a box 32 and filtrate is drawn through openings 12, 13 and an elongated slot of the suction box 24 and thence-through a discharge duct 30. The cake is removed from the belt 35 by a steam or air jet 44 and a scraper 39 and the belt is cleaned during its lower horizontal rim by water sprays 42 and corresponding sprays 40 clean the lower rim of the mat 2.
