Abstract
Fine grain polyethylene suitable for forming thin coatings on supports such as paper and textiles is prepared by dissolving the polymer in a liquid above 65 DEG C., cooling the solution to form a solid gel, preferably at a temperature below the freezing point of the solvent, and mechanically comminuting the gel The solvent is then driven off. The addition of less than 1 per cent. silicone oil assists in the production of non-adherent particles. The comminution of the gel may also be effected in a further solvent to form a dispersion, using a temperature not far below the melting point of the gel. Specified solvents are benzine, trichloroethylene and turpentine oil. For coatings on absorbent material, the compositions may include a substance for stopping the pores, e.g. that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Oppanol." Foils may be prepared by applying the powdered polyethylene to a smooth support coated with silicone oil and releasing the layer produced, as, for example, between endless metal bands passing through an oven. Specification 640,177 is referred to.ALSO:Polyethylene coatings are provided on supports, e.g. of paper or textiles, by first dissolving the polyethylene at a temperature above 65 DEG C. in a liquid solvent, cooling the solution to form a solid gel, mechanically comminuting the gel, applying the resulting polyethylene in a thin layer to the support, heating to soften the layer, and flattening the granules. In a modification, the comminution is effected in a further solvent to form a dispersion which is applied to the support. The powder may be applied to a continuously moving band which is passed through an oven and then through rollers, or it may be applied by spraying, casting, painting or dipping, all at room temperature. The solvent is evaporated during the heating to soften the polymer. Substances, such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Oppanol," may be added to the dispersions for use on absorbent surfaces. Specification 640,177, [Group IV(a)], is referred to.
