Abstract

Minerals or gas purifying masses containing elementary sulphur are roasted in a fluidized bed consisting predominantly of roasted particles of the same kind, by the upward passage of an oxygen containing gas. Sulphidic materials such as pyrites may be mixed with the sulphur-containing masses and roasted therewith. The solids may be employed in grain sizes up to 10 mm. or disintegrable agglomerates up to 20 mm. may be used. Temperatures may be from 400-1100 DEG C. According to examples (1) gas-purifying mass having a sulphur content of 46.8 per cent. is supplied at 1160 kilos. per hour to a fluidized bed of roasted gas purifier mass maintained at 900 DEG C., the grate surface area being 1.23 sq. metres and its quiescent height, 45 cm. The roasted product, containing 2.68 per cent. sulphur, of which 2.49 per cent. is sulphate, is removed by entrainment and the roaster gases contain 17 per cent. sulphur dioxide and 6.5 grams sulphur trioxide per cubic metre. (2) Keciborlu (a Turkish sulphur mineral containing 70 per cent. elementary sulphur) is fed at the rate of 440 kilograms per hour per square metre of bed cross-section, to a bed consisting predominantly of roasted particles of the same kind maintained at 825 DEG C. A gas containing 18.5 per cent. SO2 is obtained and the roasted ore containing about 1.9 per cent. sulphur is mainly entrained with the roaster gases. Other sulphur minerals such as Sicilian and Italian minerals containing 20 to 33 per cent. sulphur in addition to gypsum, clay and limestone, as well as those having a low sulphur content (10-15 per cent.) may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 708,972.
