Abstract
718,100. Variable-speed gear. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. July 3'1, 1952 [May 17, 1951], No. 11525/51. Class 80 (2) [Also in Groups XXVI, XXVII and XXIX] Infinitely-variable change-speed gearing, giving a definite predetermined transmission ratio for each setting of a master control device also determining engine speed and fuel intake rate, is provided between the crankshaft A<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, or crankshafts of a compression-ignition or other fuel-injection type internal-combustion engine A and the rigidly coupled or otherwise directly interconnected rotors of an exhaust gas-turbine J and a gaseous charge compressor H. The mechanisms H, J may be other than co-axial, with their rotors directly interconnected by constant-ratio gearing. The change-speed gearing shown comprises an epicyclic train having a planet carrier D<SP>1</SP> geared to a propellor shaft B driven from the crankshaft A', a sun gear D' on the rotor shaft H' of the turbine-compressor assembly H, J and a ring gear D<SP>2</SP> variably driven from the carrier D<SP>1</SP> through gearing of the kind described in Specification 524,598 and controlled by a lever G<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, which swings linked arms E<SP>9</SP> to traverse driving friction wheels F<SP>1</SP> radialdy between driven friction discs F<SP>2</SP> geared to the ring gear D<SP>3</SP>, the wheels F<SP>1</SP> being driven from a ring gear E' powered from the carrier D<SP>1</SP> and meshing gears E<SP>4</SP> on the pivotal axis of the arms E<SP>9</SP> and each rigid with a gear E<SP>6</SP> meshing a gear E<SP>7</SP> fast with the corresponding wheels F<SP>1</SP>.
