Abstract
A suitable coating composition for paper, metal foil, or paper-metal foil laminate for use as labels for reusable containers, which can be readily decomposed by caustic alkali washing baths comprises nitrocellulose of 9.2-11.7 per cent. nitrogen content and a resinous reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol, an organic polybasic acid, and hydrogenated abietyl alcohol, with or without a plasticizer, pigment or dyestuff. The readily hydrolyzable resinous reaction product of low water solubility is prepared by heating 2-3 mols. phthalic anhydride or succinic acid, 3-4 mol. hydrogenated abietyl alcohol, and 2/3 -1 mol. glycerine or sorbitol for 3 hours at 175-180 DEG C., and then further heating for 3-9 hours at 210-230 DEG C. in an oil bath under an air condenser, so that the formed water escapes; the acid number of the product is 19-20. The composition is applied in solution in a mixture of solvents selected from acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, toluol, methyl "Cellosolve" (R.T.M.), ethyl and isopropyl alcohol, ethyl, n-butyl, and isopropyl acetate. The nitrogen content of the nitrocellulose is preferably 10.7-11.2 per cent. The proportion of nitrocellulose may be 2.33-95.5 per cent. and that of resinous product 2.21-95.5 per cent. In the examples, specified pigments are lead-molybdenum chromate, lithol rubine, titanium dioxide, and carbon black, and ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate is also included.
