Class 106 (1) An apparatus for storing and delaying an impulse from a sensing device in a card sorter so that the sorter controlling device may be operated at the correct time, is of the well-known circular form and is characterized in that between the setting station and the operating station there is provided one or more additional operating stations for cancelling a setting or initiating a setting of the members which will take effect later at the operating station to control the sorting apparatus. The apparatus as shown in Fig. 1 comprises a disc 1 mounted on a shaft 2 for rotation in the direction of the arrow 3 is provided with a series of movable pins 4. A setting magnet 5 attracts one of the pins 4a when it is energized by a card reading occurring at that time. The pin 4a in its active position will actuate a lever 6, when it reaches this position, to move a card deflector coupled thereto. The invention provides further magnets 11, 13, mounted on adjustable arms 10, 12 so that they may be moved to any position desired around the periphery of the disc 1. The magnets 11, 13 are placed on the opposite side of the disc 1 to the magnet 5 and are adapted to be energized by a further card reading subsequent to that energizing magnet 5. Thus either of the magnets 11, 13 may, if energized by a card reading, cancel a previous setting made by the magnet 5, by returning the pins 4 into their inactive positions within the disc 1, out of alignment with the operating lever 6. An electromagnet 7 is positioned beyond the operating station to return all pins to their inoperative positions after they have actuated the operating lever 6. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, the setting magnet 5 is moved to the position shown and a set of magnets 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, are provided, three on one side of the disc 1 and two on the other, so that including the magnet 5 there are three possible stations for setting up any of the pins into their active positions, and three possible positions for returning any of the pins to their inactive positions before reaching the operating lever 6. In addition, a further magnet 3t is arranged so that if energized the lever 6 may be held off in an inoperative position where it will not be influenced by any of the pins 4 whether set to active position or not. In a further modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the disc support 21 is fixed to a shaft 22 and is provided with a series of U-shaped members 24. The operating station consists of a horseshoe electromagnet 25 directed towards the side of the disc where the legs of U-shaped members 24 may extend if influenced by the magnet. A controlling lever 26 is provided which may be moved by an extending leg of one of the members 24 when in the active position. In the direction of rotation shown by the arrow 27, there is provided in front of the operating magnet 25, a leaf spring 28 which returns any members 24 to the inactive position after they have passed the operating lever 26. An electromagnet 30 is provided on the other side which, if energized, will return to inactive positions any of the members 24 which have been set up by the magnet 25. A plate 29 prevents the members 24 from falling out on the far side of the disc 21. The disc 29, and all of the carrier. parts described earlier, are of non- magnetic material, except the pins 4 and the members 24. Specifications 396,805 and 658,971 are referred to.
