Abstract

717,414. Magnetic fluid clutch. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. June 6, 1951 [Nov. 27, 1950], No. 13469/51. Class 80 (2) [Groups XXVI and XXXIV] A shaft 5 carrying one member 6 of an electromagnetic clutch is supported by bearings 4 in a housing 2 attached to the other member 1 and is sealed by two axially spaced seals 10, 17 having therebetween a chamber 13 connected by passages 24 with the space 7 between the clutch members that is filled with a magnetic liquid of iron particles dispersed in oil. The shaft 5 carries a screw pump 5b at one end to circulate magnetic liquid within the space 7 and is screw threaded at 5a to act as a pump to draw filtered liquid from the chamber 13 through the seal 10. A permanent or electromagnetic ring 12 is mounted in the space 7 near the passages 24 and magnetized screws 15 project radially into the chamber 13. A field coil 8 fitted in the member 1 is energized at will by current from an external source, via slip rings 9 to operate the clutch. Magnetic liquid forced through the passages 24 during operation of the clutch is filtered by the magnetic ring 12 the iron particles either adhering thereto or being thrown therefrom toward the space 7 by the coned surface 7a-of the housing 2. Any particles that enter the chamber 13 are thrown outward by a slinger 16 and adhere to the magnetized screws 15. leakage through seal 10 from the space 7 to the chamber 13 is opposed by the screw 5a which may be replaced by a gear or rotary pump. In a modification the magnetic ring 12 is replaced by a mechanical filter.
